The Central Waterfront neighborhood of San Francisco is bordered by the Mission Bay neighborhood to the north, the Bayview district to the south, Potrero Hill to the west, and the San Francisco Bay to the east. As with all of the San Francisco neighborhoods between the Giants baseball stadium and the old Candlestick Park location, the Central Waterfront district is undergoing massive change and redevelopment, with new office buildings, research centers, live/work lofts, apartments, condos, and retail businesses being added at a manic pace. The path of new construction and development is roughly following a trail right down Third Street — right along the Light Rail system that runs from the old Candlestick location all the way into the Financial District. This is an up and coming district of San Francisco that is rapidly improving in a very big way. The Central Waterfront is actually a very old San Francisco neighborhood. At one time, before the rise of Oakland as a port, San Francisco was THE port in the bay area. The Central Waterfront district was developed after the construction of the Long Bridge across Mission Bay in 1857. The neighborhood became home to dozens of factories and heavy industry. In the 1930’s, the area became known as “Dogpatch”. Following World War II, there was a slow and gradual decline in industry, and many of the factories began to close. Still, Dogpatch is considered one of the city’s most intact turn of the century working class neighborhoods. Take a drive down the 1000 block of Tennessee, or the 900 block of Minnesota, for an idea of what most of the neighborhood looked like near the turn of the century. The current trend is towards live/work lofts, and large new loft buildings continue to be built, revitalizing San Francisco’s Central Waterfront district.
